Lorton Real Estate

Lorton is a friendly, growing community of about 18,000 residents located about 20 miles southwest of Washington, DC. Nestled between interstate 95 and the Potomac River, it offers easy transport access to Washington and neighboring Northern Virginia communities where most of Lorton's residents work and commute to daily.

Prestigious K-12 schools, as part of the Fairfax County Public School System, tree-lined streets, and proximity to a vast number of nature activities are just some of Lorton's assets. Lorton is also close to major shopping centers like Springfield Mall and Potomac Mills which lure thousands of shoppers. Tysons Corner and the antique row in Alexandria are also a close drive away.

Real estate in the Washington metropolitan area is among the most highly prices in the country, but Lorton is fairly affordable, with a median home price of $232,000. Most homes range between $170,000 and $330,000.

Lorton was developed after the 1950s, so most of the homes are well established. New construction is also ongoing, and row homes, high rises, condos, and single-family homes are available. New homes here range from the high $200's for condominiums to nearly one million for stately properties along the Potomac River.

Lorton residents take advantage of outdoor community events – arts and crafts fairs, parades, farmers' markets, and other activities that bring together adults and kids for a good time. Rich nature – vast parks and the banks of the Potomac River – are a heaven for those looking to boat, fish, picnic, hike, jog, trek, or just breath clean air.

The area has a low crime rate, and is an excellent place to raise children. As part of the Fairfax Public School System, Lorton residents send their children to schools that well cared for and benefit from a fair bit of investment. Classroom sizes are small, and the teacher to student ration higher than the national average. Most youngsters graduate from high school and go on pursue a college degree.

The median income of Lorton residents is about $63,000. Most people work for the federal or local government in or around Washington, as well as for thousands of subcontracting companies. Large technology and banking corporations are headquartered in the region, too. Additional jobs are provided by the area's numerous higher education institutions, think tanks, and large international organizations.
