Find out how much La Plata Real Estate is worth

La Plata, Maryland, is a growing community home 18,000 residents of diverse cultural backgrounds. La Plata owes its prosperity to being the county seat of Charles County. The city was just a crossroads in an oak forest until the Pennsylvania Railroad was given the land it needed to build their railroad in 1869. The town was given its own stop labeled "La Plata Station."

Today, La Plata is a quiet area of great schools and a low crime rate. It is home to families with children, young professionals, and retirees. The latter group has been growing particularly quickly in recent years, and now a third of all residents are over the age of 50.

As the older population has grown, so have the amenities catering to retirees. This has made the region a popular retirement spot, and was named as such last year by CNN/Money and Money magazine. The survey found La Plata to have easy access to more movie theathers, restaurants, golf courses, libraries and museums than most communities around the nation.

The average home in La Plata sold for $573,372 in January 2006, and is typically a three or four bedroom single-family home built since 1965. Some newer and larger as well as historic properties, and land for custom real estate development are available. There are also smaller row homes and units in apartment complexes. Prices range from $170,000 to $490,000, with a few properties selling for less than $170,000 and a few selling for more than a million dollars.

The education needs of youth in La Plata are well met by an excellent public school system provided by Charles County and several nearby quality private schools. Higher education is available at various topnotch colleges and universities in the Washington metropolitan area, including the University of Maryland and Johns Hopkins University.

La Plata is an excellent place to buy a home for nature lovers, who can enjoy fishing in the many area rivers. The nearby Smallwood State Park also offers hiking and picnicking. The area offers a rich wildlife, acres of wonderful woodland, miles of shoreline, and plenty of historical landmarks to keep residents entertained in their free time.
