Dumfries Real Estate

Dumfries is Virginia's oldest chartered town. Located about 32 miles outside of Washington, DC in Prince William County, the community retains the charm, peace, and small town feeling of its early days.

Occupying less than two square miles, Dumfries has a population of less than 5,000 residents. Local real estate is rich in history as the town itself. There are a small number of old established and historic homes, which fetch a high price. Dumfries grew mostly after the 1950s, so the majority of available real estate has been built since then.

The median home price here is about $221,000. Many smaller homes also sell for $90,000 to $170,000. In addition, some of the more prized real estate, stretching along the waterfront, sells for as much as half a million.

The town of Dumfries was born in 1690 and was named after the birthplace of one of its early settlers, John Graham, who hailed from Dumfrieshire, Scotland. The town received its charter on May 11, 1749 – an event local residents mark with a celebration each year.

Today, historic markers are still scattered throughout Dumfries, and one feels as though stepping back in time when visiting sites like the Huie-Reid Store, the Weems Botts Museum, or the Dumfries Court House, which is older than most in the region. Outdoor festivals, such as arts and crafts, are held throughout the year. The region is close to farmers' markets, numerous parks, and plenty of outdoor activities.

Being one of the more distant suburbs of Washington, Dumfries is a fairly quiet, relaxed neighborhood. Residents earn an income higher than the national average but not as high as those in suburbs closer to the nation's capital. Most homes are occupied by owners, but Dumfries also has a rental community.

Dumfries has good schools, with small class room size and good teacher to student ration. It is also close to higher education institutions, which many young residents go on to attend. Dumfries is the ideal location for folks looking for a charming, small town feel, while still remaining in proximity to major cities, airports, and attractions.
