Clifton Real Estate

The town of Clifton, as the Clifton Betterment Association (the local civic association) proudly states, has maintained the charm and feeling of a Norman Rockwell painting. In its earliest days, the area was Indian hunting grounds, later it became plantation estates. During the Civil War Clifton was known as Devereux Station. In 1868, Devereux Station became known as Clifton Station. In 1902, the Clifton Station was officially established as a town by Charter by the General Assembly.

Today, the charming, historic community is home to about 300 residents. As part of Fairfax County Public School System, it offers some of the best schools in the country. Its tree-lined streets, old homes with white picket fences and low crime rate make it an attractive place to live. There are shops and restaurants, and various outdoor festivals, including the annual autumn-held “Clifton Day.” This small town feeling is complimented by Clifton's proximity to Washington, DC, which offers residents a gateway to a more fast-paced, cosmopolitan life within minutes of driving.

The real estate in Clifton is as rich as the town's history. Historic Victorian homes and farmhouses are available, as are smaller established homes, and some row houses and complexes. Most units are medium or large, with more than three bedrooms. The average home sales price in January 2006 was $648,800. Homes can list for more than three times that amount for large estates with beautiful rolling hills and horse yards.

Nearly 90 percent of Clifton residents are college educated, a fact reflected in the medium household income of $117,000. Local children are also on the path to a good education, as they attend excellent K-12 schools part of the Fairfax County Public School System, which boasts high test scores and graduation rates for its pupils. Most Clifton high school students go on to pursue a college degree.

Among the town's architectural gems is the Beckwith House, also called "the Homestead,” was built in 1771 and is Clifton's oldest house. The Mayhugh Tavern (1870), once operated by Gustie "Grandpap" Mayhugh who strived to "run an orderly and genteel bar,” is not a site to be missed. Other structures of interest are the Clifton Baptist Church (1876) with its spire steeple and gothic windows, and the Hetzel House, named after its resident Susan Riviere Hetzel, founder of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
