Bowie Real Estate

The city of Bowie is the largest incorporated municipality in Prince George's County, with its more than 54,000 residents. Bowie enjoys a rich and diverse cultural heritage, dating back to the 1800s. Today, it is a thriving suburb of the nation's capitol with a fittingly descriptive motto that proclaims “Growth, Unity and Progress.”

Covering about 16 square miles, Bowie is fairly green given its nearly 2,000 acres set aside as parks and open space. It has 72 ball fields, three community centers, an ice arena, a theatrical playhouse, a golf course, three museums, and scores of shopping and dinning venues. Recently, the town has also added a state-of-the-art senior citizens center and a gymnasium for community programs.

Bowie has three public high schools, which offer students a favorable teacher to student ratio and small class sizes, compared to the national average. Bowie is also home to Bowie State University, which has more than 3,000 full-time students.

The average home or condo sold for $393,110 in January 2006. The real estate market here offers an array of stunning, classical homes built on large lots and lush rolling hills. Most homes in Bowie are single-family detached units, with the remainder being a mix of multi-family housing, including condominiums and modest town houses. Over eighty percent of residents own rather than rent their homes.

The town of Bowie owes its existence to the railway. In 1853, Col. William D. Bowie obtained a charter from the Maryland legislature to construct a rail line into Southern Maryland. Today, a railroad museum is open for residents and visitors to explore. Bowie is also home to the historic Belair Mansion (circa 1745), the beautiful five-part Georgian plantation house of Governor Samuel Ogle, and his son Governor Benjamin Ogle. Later it was bought by a wealthy banker whose nephew; William Woodward, Sr. became a famous horseman.

Restored to reflect its 250-year-old legacy, the Mansion is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Belair's stable was – between the 1930s and 1950s – one of the premier racing stables in the country. It is said that the blood of Belair horses flows through the veins of every American race horse of distinction.
