Bailey's Crossroads Real Estate

Bailey's Crossroads, Virginia, a region rich in history, is now a cultural mélange of colors, customs, sights and sounds. The community covers an eight-mile stretch along Columbia Pike in Fairfax County and is a melting pot of nearly 39,000 residents of different cultures and backgrounds. Because of its location, the Bailey's Crossroads has emerged as a transit hub connecting Arlington, Alexandria, northern Fairfax County and Washington, DC.

Real estate – residential, commercial and retail – is as diverse as the population, and makes for a prosperous climate, and a great assortment of business and restaurants adds to a bustling community-rich environment. Many Asian restaurants and specialty stores are located here.

The average home in this low-crime community sold for $334,265 in January 2006. This typically buys a three bedroom home of approximately 1700 square feet, built since the 1960s. Older and historic homes, as well as newer developments are also available, along with larger single-family and row house properties. The most affluent, upscale community here is built around a lake.

Excellent Fairfax County K-12 public schools meet the education of children in this area. There are also some quality private schools. Both boast high graduation rates, and most students go on to pursue a college degree. Unemployment in Bailey's Crossroad is 50 percent lower than the national average, at a mere 2.5 percent. Job growth here is three times faster than nationwide and future job creation is projected to grow at the same high pace. The average household income here is about $60,000.

The area is rich in history. What is now Leesburg Pike began as a buffalo trail and was later adapted as an Indian trail. It ran across a ridge that spanned from the Potomac River, at present-day Old Town Alexandria, to the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Leesburg.

Bailey's Crossroads became a true crossroads with the construction of Columbia Pike in 1809. Later entrepreneur named Hachaliah Bailey bought the land and established here the winter headquarters for his small circus that featured America's first elephant. The circus lasted until 1861; Bailey eventually merged his circus with that of P.T. Barnum, which went on to become "The Greatest Show on Earth."
